- Sarah Shields-
- 50 years old- started by 2 teachers in Boston.
- Factors that make up our identity- belonging-division created by ourselves. Use History to analyze the legacy and where we see the echoes and choices today. How does it impact us and choosing to participate?
- Whole school and district wide work. How do we build culture in our school? Work with the employees school wide (schools where we belong).
- Schools Where we Belong- introduce schools communities.
- Learn school community- help build what is already in place.
- School design team. 2-2.5 year
- Select social studies curriculum and resources.
- Building reflective classrooms across the school. (cross all content area)
- All staff members
- Shared practices and vocabulary school wide.
- School design team. 2-2.5 year
- After 2 years- can work with other schools and connect with others.
- Learn school community- help build what is already in place.
- Example: Civil Discourse
- Comments made to other students about their identity or graffiti
- They would being in strategies to help
- In the moment- Sentence starters to respond in the moment.
- The deeper meaning
- Build teacher and students stamina to lean into these. Interactions, what off limits, addressing everyone- beliefs, identity, ect.
- Questions by members with answers:
- Case studies taught by grade level- Would it be the whole year or just a period in time?
- Resources range- 18 week unit, normal 4-6 weeks.
- This is an approach to Social Studies. Some schools will redesign their year to cover- identity, legacies, will we choose to participate, etc.
- How would this work with what we have already discussed regarding how to have students feel included?
- What are the program structures to support those cliques of students?
- Program builds communities in the classroom- all students are working together, not just those who are friends.
- Opportunities to help students build relationships, and help teachers know how to do it.

- How does this program help teachers have a common response or handling of students who blurt out inappropriate things?
- Develop classroom contract
- Some do a whole school and not just classroom

- Slow down and go over the purpose of classrooms.

- Input from Spencer after meeting:
- This is not to replace our social studies curriculum
- Trying to find a way to combat racial issues we are having at our school.
- We want to help our teacher know how we can help our teachers handle this.
- Possibly have them do a training with the teachers- School Board does need to see it first.
- Teach social skills- Civil Deficiency
- Cost Money- Not sure how we will pay for it yet. May ask for some from the Community Council.

- Election can be held at the start or end of the year
- Spencer will reach out and see if there is any interest.
- Spencer reaches out to Elementary Principles to see who has served down there and possibly reach out for next year.
